Knights Fall to Stockton in ECACs

POMONA, N.J. - Despite two hits each from junior Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.), the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Stockton College on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Metro Region Tournament.  The Knights finish the year at 21-18.

MSMC got on the board first with three straight hits in the top of the first.  Senior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) singled up the middle and moved to second when sophomore Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) singled to left field.  Cherubino followed with a base hit to center, allowing Conroy to score from second.

Stockton answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Knights were quick to tie the game with one in the top of the second.  Freshman Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to right field, moved to second on an error, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on a sac fly from junior Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

The Ospreys responded again, however, this time with a single run in the second for a 3-2 advantage.  The score would remain the same into the late innings and when the Mount stranded a pair of runners in the seventh, Stockton created some separation with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.  The Knights wasted a leadoff single in the eighth and the Ospreys tacked on another for a 6-2 advantage that they would not relinquish.

Cherubino finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Chieffo also posted a 2-for-4 line.  Matuk went 1-for-4 with an RBI and both Conroy and Lubrano were 1-for-4 with a run scored.

On the hill, junior Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) made the start for the Knights, allowing seven hits and three runs over five innings.  Freshman Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) finished off the game, yielding just three hits and one unearned run over the final three.
