Knights Outlast Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Tournament Quarterfinals

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The teams combined for 23 runs on 28 hits during Wednesday's Skyline Conference quarterfinal game and when the dust finally settled, it was Mount Saint Mary College who emerged with a 13-10 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent.  The Knights (21-15) advance to the double-elimination stage of the tournament this weekend at Farmingdale.

Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Mount Saint Mary hung a seven on the scoreboard to take a 9-5 lead.  Junior Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) delivered the first big blow of the inning, lacing a single through the right side with the bases loaded to drive home a pair of runs and give the Knights their first lead at 6-5.  Then, with runners at first and second, sophomore Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) found the gap in left-center for a double.  Cherubino scored from second, as did junior Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) from first, to make it 9-5.

The Knights tacked on three more in the sixth.  With the bases loaded once again, Cherubino crushed a ball to the wall in left-center.  The runners were forced to hold, however, so Cherubino was forced to settle for a single and just the one RBI.  Senior Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) followed up with a two-run single through the right side to make it 12-5, MSMC.

Not ready to concede, Mount Saint Vincent crawled back into the game with three runs in the eighth.  Back-to-back singles from senior T.J. Laible (Rockaway, N.Y.) and senior Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) set the table for the Dolphins.  Three consecutive walks ensued, forcing home a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 12-7.  Junior Kevin Coogan (Bronx, N.Y.) drove home the third run of the inning with a fielder's choice.

The Knights picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Thomas McNoble RBI single that made the score, 13-8.  Still unwilling to go away, Mount Saint Vincent made things interesting with four consecutive hits to start the ninth.  The fourth base hit, a single to center from sophomore Josh Sharpe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), cut the deficit to just four at 13-9.  Then, with one out, senior Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) singled through the left side to make it 13-10.  The rally would end there, however, as Coogan struck out looking and senior Benjamin Toro (Yonkers, N.Y.) flew out to right field to end the game.

Paul Cherubino
For MSMC, Cherubino finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Chieffo came away 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Senior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) and Brian McNoble each had a pair of hits, as junior Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and sophomore Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) each scored three runs.

Freshman pitcher Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y.) came on with one out in the third and worked his way through the sixth inning to earn the win.  The rookie allowed just three hits while walking two and striking out two.  Sophomore reliever Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless seventh, but allowed the first four batters of the eighth to reach.  Freshman Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) came on to limit the damage in the eighth, but allowed the first three batters to reach in the ninth.  Sophomore Russ Pagano (Cedar Grove, N.J.) stemmed the tide in the ninth and recorded the game's final three outs.

Lavery led the Dolphins with four hits (4-for-6) and a pair of runs scored, while Laible went 3-for-6 with three runs scored.  Sargente was 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brian Rush (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) was excellent for four innings, but was chased in the fifth by the big MSMC rally.  Senior Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) recorded three outs before turning it over to junior Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) who went the rest of the way.  Rush took the loss for the Dolphins.

With the victory, the Knights advance to the double-elimination stage of the tournament and will take on top-seeded Farmingdale State College in the opening game.  The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday in Farmingdale.
