FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (21-13-1) was knocked out of the Skyline Conference playoffs with a 2-1 loss to Polytechnic Institute of NYU (23-14) on Saturday afternoon in Farmingdale. After coming back to win against Old Westbury in the first game, the Knights were kept in check by the Fighting Blue Jays in the loser's bracket final.
In game one, sophomore
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) scattered five hits allowing only one run in the winning effort. Scoreless after four, Old Westbury's Jessica Spero led off the top of the fifth with a double and later scored on a Samantha Howley single up the middle.
The Mount was unable to answer back until the bottom of the sixth when senior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) hit an infield single. She was followed by freshman
Brittany O'Brien (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who reached safely on a fielder's choice. Senior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, putting both runners in scoring position. Two batters later, freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn) singled to left field, plating both Kehlenbeck and O'Brien. The Knights never looked back, and advanced to the next round of the loser's bracket against NYU-Polytechnic. The final score of game one was 2-1.
NYU-Polytechnic jumped off to a quick lead in game two. After Karina Amaro scorched a single off Maynes' chin, she later scored on a ground out by Megan Moran. Maynes shook it off, and helped the Knights get out of the inning. The Fighting Blue Jays scored another run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the top of 4th, Peel singled and scored when Maynes ripped a double down the third base line. Unfortunately that would be all for the Knights as NYU-Polytechnic held on take home the 2-1 victory. They will play Farmingdale State tomorrow for the Skyline Conference championship.
Maynes finished the day with eight strikeouts. Peel was 3-for-6 on the day with three singles, two RBIs, and a run scored.
After completing one of the most successful seasons in recent years, the Knights will wait to hear if they qualify for the ECAC Metro Region Tournament. The brackets will be announced on Monday, May 9.
