NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College junior Erin McKeon (Watertown, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute on Wednesday evening, sending her team to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark. The Knights improved to 2-1 on the young season, while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 2-2.

With play finally opening up late in the second half, Mount sophomore Lex Heal (Port Jervis, N.Y.) dribbled the ball down the left side and found some space to cross the ball to the middle of the field. The cross tipped off the fingers of the Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper and fell to McKeon, who buried it in the back of the net.

The goal finished off a strong effort from McKeon, who had multiple other opportunities to score in the contest. In the 65th minute, McKeon received a pass near the top right corner of the box and fired a low shot that just skipped past the far post. The junior also had shots in the 49th minute and the 71st minute.

Several Knights put in a strong effort at the defensive end of the field, most notably sophomore Lindsey Oro (Holtsville, N.Y.) who directed traffic at the back for most of the evening. Freshman Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.J.) also had a nice game and sparked the offense on several occasions from her spot on defense.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Cotta (Brick, N.J.) made four saves to preserve the shutout for the Mount.

The Knights will take their winning record on the road to the Liberty Cup this weekend, hosted by New Jersey City University. They’ll take on the hosts at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, before turning around to play Ramapo College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
