Knights Split Holiday Weekend Matches

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College women’s tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches over the weekend to move to 2-1 on the season. The Knights lost to Marywood University, 5-4, on Sunday, but rebounded to defeat Misericordia University by a score of 8-1 on Monday.

The Marywood match was tied at 4-4 with only one point left to be decided at fifth singles. Mount sophomore Jen Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) battled for nearly three hours before eventually falling 7-5 in the third set. Gregory had won the first set, 8-6 in a tiebreaker, before losing the second set, 6-3.

Sophomore Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) and senior Lindsay Searle (Farmington, Conn.) claimed singles points at the top of the lineup. Murphy-Goldberg cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at first, while Searle edged her opponent at second, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Sophomore Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) claimed a singles point at the sixth position, rolling to a 6-0, 6-2.

The Knights were able to win just one of the three doubles points, as Murphy-Goldberg and Emily Gregory teamed for an 8-2 win in the first position.

On Monday, the Mount jumped out to a big lead with a sweep of the doubles play. The Knights went unchallenged in three matches, yielding a total of just five games.

In singles action, Murphy-Goldberg claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory at first singles, while Searle nabbed a 7-5, 6-0 decision at two. Freshman Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles, while the Gregory twins took points at fifth and sixth. Emily was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at fifth, while Jen took a 6-0, 6-3 decision at sixth.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, September 11 with a road trip to St. Joseph’s College. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Women's Swimming
Freshman Meghan Seaman was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year on Saturday while helping her team to the Skyline Conference championship.  Seaman won a pair of individual titles, including the 200 freesyle (2:11.13) and the 1,000 freestyle (12:15.07).  The rookie also finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.76) and swam the leadoff leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay, which set a Skyline meet record with a time of 4:00.36.

Senior Censi Danner was named the Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Year on Saturday while leading the Knights to the Skyline Conference championship, the team's third in the last five years.  Danner won all three of her individual events including the 50 freestyle (25.79), the 100 freestyle (57.74), and the 200 individual medley (2:21.27).    The senior also swam the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay, which set a Skyline meet record with a time of 4:00.36.
