NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Hunter College junior Omry Lifschitz (Tel Aviv, Israel) scored in the 20th minute to lead the Hawks (1-0-0) to a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the season opener for both teams. The Knights fell to 0-1-0 on Kaplan Field’s new synthetic turf.
In the 20th minute, Hunter junior Mario Rojas (Pereira, Columbia) settled the ball on the left side before releasing a cross to the middle of the field. The cross bounced once and found the foot of Lifschitz, who drilled a shot to the top left corner.
With the clock ticking down in the second half, the Knights increased their offensive pressure by bringing on an extra forward. The move almost paid off, as sophomore
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.) nearly tied the game in the final two minutes. A cross bounced around in the box before falling to Pagano, who sent a shot careening off the crossbar. The Knights put the ball in the net on the rebound, but were ruled offsides on the play.
Freshman goalkeeper
Matthew Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was solid in his collegiate debut for the Mount, allowing just the one goal while making five saves. Hunter junior Zade Haobsh (Wayne, N.J.) made four saves to preserve the shutout for the Hawks.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, September 4 with a road trip to Albertus Magnus. Game time is 1:00 p.m. in New Haven, Connecticut.
