NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College men's and women's swimming teams opened up their season on Saturday by hosting five other teams at the Mount Saint Mary College Invitational. The Blue Knights finished second on the women's side and fourth on the men's side.
A pair of first-year swimmers turned heads on the women's side with two event victories each. Freshman
Brianna Perazella (Cheshire, Conn.) set a new school record in capturing the 200 freestyle (2:07.44) and was just three-tenths of a second off record pace in the 200 individual medley (2:23.98). Freshman
Jamie Testa (Prospect, Conn.) made her mark in the butterfly events, taking home first place in the 100 fly (1:08.00) and the 50 fly (29.84).
Freshman
Kassie Kayal (Wayne, N.J.) also had a nice day, collecting two second-place finishes. She was just five seconds off the pace in the 500 freestyle (6:01.89) and also collected second place points in the 100 backstroke (1:11.31).
On the men's side, sophomore
Enrique Naudy (Monroe, N.Y.) took home first place in all three of his events. Naudy was a runaway winner in the 100 individual medley (57.79) and dominated the 200 individual medley in 2:08.09. The sophomore also tied the school record in the 50 butterfly, matching the mark of 25.02.
Junior
Ryan Carroll (Goshen, N.Y.) swam well in the backstroke events, finishing second in the 50 back (27.28) and the 100 back (58.34).
William Paterson University took home both first place trophies in the team competition. The Pioneers were first with 463 points on the women's side to the Mount's 389. The William Paterson men ran away with the meet, totaling 522.5 points. Maritime was second on the men's side.
Up next for the Mount swimmers is an away meet with York College. The Blue Knights will swim on Tuesday, November 3 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
