NEWBURGH, NY – The Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team earned a crucial Skyline Conference victory on Thursday, defeating the Sage Colleges by a score of 6-3. The Blue Knights improved to 6-0 in conference play and kept pace with St. Joseph's for the top spot in the league standings. Sage dropped to 9-4 overall and to 6-2 in the Skyline.
The Blue Knights took two of the three doubles points to start the match. Junior
Laura Wolons (Middletown, N.Y.) and freshman
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) had the closest match, pulling out an 8-6 win at third doubles. Juniors
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) and
Danielle Kehoe (Goshen, N.Y.) won 8-3 at second doubles.
In singles play, the Mount took points at second, third, fourth, and fifth to clinch the match. Junior
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at second singles and Giordano matched her result at fourth singles. Llewellyn rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 decision at fifth while Kehoe pulled out a third-set super tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 11-9) at fourth singles.
The final weekend of the season will go a long way towards determining the look of the Skyline Tournament. The Mount will take on Farmingdale and St. Joseph's over the weekend with the seeding for the tournament still very much up in the air. The match against Farmingdale is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and the match with St. Joseph's is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., both on Long Island.
